Gamification in the Adult Learning Environment
Gamification strategies are more than adding cleaver review games at the end of your training or facilitating a fun icebreaker as an introduction to your topic. Gamification is substituting one or more instructional formats with game elements in the delivery of content comprehension and /or skill building. Recent brain-based research suggests a similarity between adult learning principles (andragogy) and the fundamental motivation triggers in games. Because of our success in linking these together in our learners’ classroom experience, trainers and instructional designers have asked us how they may do the same while maintaining the integrity of their content. This article provides techniques used by the University of Washngton in blending both classroom and gamification formats to increase adulting learning and retention.
